Global Hope for Forced Migrants (GHFM) was established and aligned with the Settlement Transformation Agenda (STA) with aiming at fostering self-reliance among refugees in Uganda. Currently UNHCR and the World Food Program (WFP) encounter challenges stemming from the overwhelming number of refugees globally and in Uganda specifically. This led to cuts in monthly food or cash rations provided to refugees.
In 2022 and 2023 refugees reacted to to the reduced aid by a significant exodus from Ugandan refugee camps such as Kyaka II, Rwamwanja, and Kyangwali, with many seeking asylum in neighboring Kenya under the belief that they would receive better care there. The government of Kenya, in collaboration with the Office of the Prime Minister in Uganda and UNHCR Uganda, facilitated the safe return of these refugees to Uganda. This situation was a motivation to establish “Global Hope for Forced Migrants” (GHFM) as a Refugee-Led CBO to support them cope positively with the food ration cut and attain self-reliance.
